Falsifying Data

Students claiming to have carried out research such as interviews or questionnaire surveys are sometimes found to have fabricated parts or all of it by taking information instead from online sources and/or from their imagination.

What We Should Do About It

The European context was described by Glendinning (2014) in reporting the findings of the large, 2010–2013 study by the European Commission funded Impact of Policies for Plagiarism in Higher Education project which compared the academic integrity policies and procedures in higher education institutions (HEI) in the 27 European Union (EU) states focusing on bachelor and master’s levels. It found that (p. 17): ‘HEIs in many parts of Europe had poorly defined policies and systems for assurance of academic integrity.’

Five of the main responses to online aided academic cheating are outlined here. They are not mutually exclusive.
